The mediation process

Mediation is a process designed to help parties find solutions for separation, as opposed to counselling, which can be helpful in deciding whether or not a relationship is at an end. Mediation can provide separated parties with a better way of communicating. This is especially significant for separated couples with children as there will inevitably be future occasions when both parents have to be in the same room.

What we can promise…

  • You will be supported in trying to find a solution that works for you and your family
  • You are never under any pressure to do or say anything you do not wish to do
  • You will not be given legal advice by the mediator (although our mediators are also solicitors) – our mediators can provide specific information, but it is essential that they remain impartial
  • You will not be forced to reach an agreement
  • Your information will not be shared with anyone outside the process unless you specifically give your consent (other than in situations where it appears to the mediator that a child is at risk of significant harm)
  • You will not be put at risk – part of the MIAM process is an assessment by the mediator of the dynamic between client A and client B and whether either person is at risk of any domestic abuse, violence, coercion or aggression
  • Our mediators are trained to deal with all circumstances and ensuring your safety at all times is our priority – if necessary we can provide what is known as “shuttle” mediation where client A and client B are in separate rooms
